The retreat began with a warm welcome by the group’s speaker and deputy speaker, Prof. Dr. Christa E. Müller and Prof. Dr. Finn Hansen, followed by an inspiring keynote lecture from Prof. Dr. Peter Gmeiner of the University of Erlangen, whose lifetime of research achievements set an insightful tone for the day. During the speed poster presentations, the PhD students showcased their cutting-edge research in succinct, three-minute sessions. These presentations were followed by two poster sessions, providing deeper discussions and networking opportunities for attendees over coffee.
A highlight was a workshop led by Dr. Susanne Berger, an expert in visual science communication, who shared insights on academic poster design. To conclude the day, participants enjoyed a fun and interactive team-building activity—3D blacklight minigolf—which fostered camaraderie among both students and group leaders. The day ended on a high note with a group dinner at Ristorante Tuscolo Bonn-Münsterblick, allowing for further informal exchanges.
Day two opened with a focus on international research exchange, starting with experience reports from our PhD students Franka Westermann, who conducted research in Portland, USA, during her master’s thesis, and Irina Honin and Katrin Nekipelov, who shared their insights from the Empowering Women in Organic Chemistry (EWOC) conference in New York, USA. These exchanges highlighted the global opportunities available to RTG members, reinforcing the group’s commitment to international collaboration.
The group then engaged in a fruitful discussion on the RTG 2873’s progress, moderated by the student speakers Florian Schwermer and Katrin Nekipelov. This session allowed for constructive feedback and refinements to ensure that the program continues to maximize the evolving needs of its participants. The group’s official General Meeting, chaired by speaker Prof. Müller and deputy speaker Prof. Hansen, was followed by a Team-Learning & Coaching Workshop, led by Britta Eremit and Svetlana Nüchter from beChange & Company. This interactive workshop explored mindfulness, self-awareness, and effective management strategies, equipping participants with valuable tools for personal and professional growth.
The retreat was a resounding success, striking a balance between intellectual exchange, skill-building, and team bonding. The participants left energized and inspired, ready to continue their cutting-edge research in medicinal chemistry as they embark on the new academic year.
